Yesterday, my system got computer aids. I got an email offering me tons of loot to manage all of the Advanced Auto Parts stores in new England. Like an idiot, I opened it and boom!!!! COMPUTER AIDS!!!!!!!! I talked to my IT guy and he told me I had to download Malwarebites to get rid of it. Problem was, I couldn't get on line to do it. I was ready to send my PC out. The guy that works on my computers is the Tech for Foxwoods Casino. To make a long story short, all I had to do was reset my computer back to a previous date and BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!! DEAD VIRUS. This virus has been around for many years. It tells you that you have Trojans, worms and everything else under the sun and then states that if you pay $49 it will clear up the problem. What it really does is clean out your bank account or credit card of all available funds. So sorry I haven't been here for a few days but the virus is dead............

ken my computer for the same thing, had a pop up that said update for security something, looked just like my normal anti virus program so i clicked ok... BAM computer went bonkers, except i could still get online so i got er killed

glad ya got it fixed bro, i'd still look into the programs i told you about on the phone
i run......"threatfire" and "winpatrol" they both run in the backround and catch sh*t before it does anything, its a little hassle telling it to allow sh*t, but they catch everything that tries to run or write stuff to your registry
and winpatrol lets you see whats running and disable sh*t that doesnt need to be, and keep it from starting unless you tell it to

i also run "advanced system care" for windows once a week,

and i use "spybot search and destroy" to clean spyware weekly

these are all free programs, and have kept me clean and running fine now for a few years, and i frequent some really shady places on the net, hahahahaaaaa

if you feel like getting a good AV/Security program, ESET NOD32 is on the top of my list. Doesnt interfere with any programs on my computer (Antivir tended to do that, its good but has some issues) and has a wicked detection rate.

macs dont get virus's or spywares ?????????????

they do, there arent as many out there though because mac's arent as popular as PC's are. You can take it one step further and go with Linux if you are really concerned. The easiest way to protect yourself is get a decent antivirus program and some knowledge.

wrong.... there are zero viruses for the mac....

Ya but who wants a mac, I mean come on seriously?? lol, j/k

AVG is a got anti spyware/maleware/virus. and if you do happen to contract something running malewarebytes or SUPER anti spyware is another good one. Best thing to do is when you boot your system to press F8 and boot into safe mode, or safe mode with networking, especially if you have an older build of MB or whatever you are using, or if you haven't downloaded them yet.

Good Luck

you may want to re think what you just wrote or do a little research... I've been around computers long enough to know there are viruses out there for mac's, just not nearly as many.

Mac is a Unix based OS (just like linux) It is very secure, but not immune from viruses.

I have a friend who's mom managed to had a tendency to catch nasty viruses on Windows, so his dad moved her to Mac. Later on she managed to get another nasty virus, so he made a last ditch attempt and threw linux on the machine. That still didnt stop her from getting a virus. Moral of the story, dont let that woman near your computer, lol.

wrong. there are some.

I recomend you get Nod32. defently the best anti-virus program ive used and ive used 3 different nortons, avast, mcafee, kaspersky and AVG. Kaspersky would be second on my list and Norton at 2nd BOTTOM because its horible but does work and mcafee is just horible and doesnt work.

Yep, what Brute said.

There ARE viruses for the MAC. Most of them are written to show apple has a particular security hole and apple releases an update for it pretty fast.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is one of the top of my list for getting rid of spyware and rootkits.

NOD32 is on the top of my list for ones you buy, and kapersky is a close second. For free AntiVir, AVG, and Threatfire are my top 3. The new 2010 Norton actually works half decent, previous years are horrid though (resource hogs, can physically take down your hard drive, and doesnt protect you from crap, same with the stuff direct from symantec). McAfee is at the bottom of my sh*t list for AV programs, you pay to have your computer exposed to viruses basically (same with microtrend). You would be much better off with some various free ones than the ones on my sh*t list.

the only way to get a harmful program onto a mac, is if the user approves the install and types in there password...
if someone were to successfully create a REAL virus for the mac they would be famous...

and if you were to type your password and willingly let it be installed. it is not considered a virus...

I would stay away from anything norton, They tend to be ok for catch rates, but they can also put a burden on your machine, especially if your running a older machine. Norton can also get annoying with the little pop up messages if you are outa date and such.

After trying super anti spyware I tend to run it more often, it seems to catch a few things that MB didn't, and it seems to find more crap overall

wrong again, Virus is a loosely defined term. It's a general term for Viruses, Trojan Horses, Worms, and Spyware. Viruses and worms are self replicating bits while trojans generally are a little heavier. Spyware isnt much of a threat but it can grab passwords or display advertisements on your computer. Tricking a user into installing it by making them think its something else is Social Engineering (that's the definition of a Trojan Horse virus however, but if it self replicates its a virus)

I did not say anything about trojans....

like I said a virus cannot install ITSELF onto a mac...and all you have to do to get rid of spyware is reset your internet browser....

link me to any virus, trojan, spyware idk... and I will show you.....

you actually did NOT state that in any of your previous posts, and you have no proof that there isnt one that will do that (i have not shown proof that there is one, but it is difficult to find a list of viruses that state if they install them self or not). To get rid of spyware is a little trickier than that, you have to delete out the cookies to get rid of those and adware actually installs itself on to the system, a browser reset wont fix that.

I am not a member of any blackhat hacker communities so i would not be able to link you to any malicious software, and i would not want to be held responsible for any damage to your computer or others. I will however encourage you to go out on the internet and go hunt one down yourself so you can see for yourself that they are in fact out there.

Attached is a paper i wrote on viruses (for school) in case you feel the need to educate yourself further on the topic.
