ive asked a number of people on this one and its pretty much the deciding factor in which direction (namely how much $$$) i end up going with. im desperate need of a fresh top end, i have virtually no compression.

heres what ive got, a fairly clean cylinder that measures 66.25mm square (round?) on a non precision caliper. the biggest issue are the exhaust bolt holes. both of them were previously stripped out and pretty much didnt stand a chance of holding bolts. i have properly heli coiled both holes, and they seem to torque down very well. however one of the flanges are cracked completely through from the outside of the thread, from the bolt outward. not from the exhaust port to the bolt. please see accompanying picture:

sorry about the quality, but holding the resonator out of the way to snap a pic with one hand makes for fuzzy pics. either way it tells you where the crack is. yes, im aware of the fact that there is no exhaust donut (gasket or whatever the technical term is) but that isnt too much of an issue as the fact that the motor barely has 1:1 compression... hence dosent run. ill be getting one in the very near future.

with all that said, should i seek another cylinder, or try to bore what ive got? im familiar with welding and i may have access to the equipment to weld the crack, but im guessing this is cast aluminum and im sure it requires specific wire/rods to weld... if possible at all.

also, will the heli coils hold up? they have been properly installed with the correct drill bit and tap, so theyre in there pretty solid.

im trying to avoid, if at all possible, dropping a ton of money in another cylinder. having this cylinder bored and getting the proper piston and rings is within the price i can afford and still be able to add some much needed parts, as well as a few extras.

any thoughts or suggestions would be highly appreciated

If you have access to a tig welder then you can weld that up. Stay away from the stick rods.

I have a freshly bored cylinder with a piston if you are interested.

a friend of mine does have a tig, however neither one of us really know how to use it :/ any chance mig with the right wire would work?

i am actively seeking a good cylinder and piston, whats the price shipped to Fl?

well pitboss, i got the package in the mail yesterday after i got off work. everything was in very good order and after a few hours i got it together.

man, there is a huge difference in compression. not that i wasnt expecting it, but its nice to actually have to fight the kick start. my scrawny 125lb ass almost dosent even have enough to kick it.... almost...

i ended up having to pull the motor completely off as some of the old rings managed to shred in the old cylinder, so i absolutely had to clean the crank case out. but, by 1:30 in the morning i shot a little fuel in the carb and gave it a kick and she fired right up. its a good thing my garage is insulated to hell and back, im sure my neighbors would have enjoyed it...

either way, thanks for the great deal and shipping it so fast!

I'm glad that you received the package and that all was in good shape. If you have any problems you can call or e-mail, good luck!
