well i finally talked my buddy, who now owns my sons old 99 lakota, to spring the loot for a new/used head from ebay, i noticed the cam and rockers were shot when i did a piston/ring/timing chain on it, the previous owner did inform me the oil plug fell out and his son ran it miles home with no oil

but i couldnt find a head, and as my sons first quad wasnt concerned about the lack of power, till after the first season and he proved he was ready for a blaster

the guy had this head on ebay for 3 weeks at $65, then he had
"make an offer", which i did and got a very good shape head for $45
pulled it all apart to do a vale job and compare the 2 cams

fired righ up after the install, and will pull wheelies now on pavement, my buddies son came back from the first ride and said it didnt feel more powerful ???
but says it feels lighter ??? and needs new tires, they just spin and slide sideways now, so the old lakota is back from the dead !!!!

no damn wonder the thing would hardly run, and felt like a 5 hp. motor
look at the "lobes" and guess which one is the new one............

the valves were hardly opening, it has gotten worse since i had it ???
not sure of their oil change regimen ???

what led me to believe it had finally gotten to this point was he said it would only start if he held his hand over the back of the carb, leading me to the conclusion the intake valve wasnt opening enuf to create any vaccum and suck fuel
this was after i cleaned the filter and carb (thanx civic for the details)

still gotta pull the carb again and get into the other 2 circuts civic told me about, it has a slight hesitation down low ????
but runs way better than it ever has since we owned it

The lobes on the Kaw cam are case hardened. The outer layer of metal is VERYYYY hard because of the hardening process but the metal the cam is MADE out of is relatively soft steel. Once you have an "oil event" the hard outer surface is scraped off and no amount of oil changes is keep the assembly from wearing out.

Hesitation down low is the three little pilot holes under the throttle butterfly. They provide the fuel for the moment the butterfly is opened until the diaphragm opens and allows fuel up around the needle. Use the little red hose taped to side of the can and shoot carburetor cleaner down into them.
