my neighbor was out riding his 97ish kodiak 400 and he broke the joint that connects the a arm to the spindle and he was wondering if he had to replace the whol a arm or if he would just buy the joint

The kodiak 400's were a non replacable ball joint. However, if it's a lower that blew and you are sufficiently handy, you can take the lower ball joint for a 03+ grizzly 660 and modify the a-arm to accept the joint. I have done this on two big bear 350 4x4's before (same style as the kodiak).
