You should have a starter relay (botton center right on the diagram above)
it should have two bolts that connect two thick wires (red ) one from batt (+) to relay and one from relay to starter .
next connect the batt (-) to a good ground
The relay should also have two small spade connectors ? or a 2 pin plug ?
Connect one connector to ground and "TOUCH" the other one to the batt (+) it should now turn on the starter

i've wired a 1957 Austin a30 and a 1970 Ford Capri (engine compartment fire harness had melted ) redid from scratch

Get the closest scematic possible to your engine (they vary alot from year to year) then print like 10 copys of it and overline with a yellow marker the individual circuits

A harnesse is just a junction of several simple circuits if you take one at a time you'll see that it's not that complicated

Pretty sure selnoid is toast. But if I wire straight starter I get a hum....?

If the starter is humming it means it's turning but does not engage
Starters are not connected to the flyweel until the moment it starts to spin
then under torque from the enercia of the bendix weight it is "screw's" back and this allows for the starter gear to engage the flyweel
When the engine starts and gains speed this allows for the dis-engagement of the starter gear

several reasons for this :

- the battery your using do'nt have enought power try a bigger fully charged battery

- The starter bendix is stuck

-starter motor is bad not getting enough speed to engage

Reasons for solenoid tick.

Low battery.

Loose or dirty battery terminals.

Starter engaged to flywheel.

Stuck Bendix (not moving up shaft).

Dirty solenoid contacts.

Missing teeth on flywheel.

Welp, on the good side I charged up my extra truck battery stuck starter to it and she spun over effortlessly. So now I might just wire her up and see what happens lol

Don't forget to ALWAYS put a fuse inline with the batt + connection
if you get someting worng it',ll just blow a fuse instead of melting the harness ! or even a fire

Fuses are a must, as Nuno said.

Fuses are the best thing, other than sliced bread.I:I
