Does anyone have a link to a diy for the 400 ex shock mounting that works. The link in the stickied section sends me to some adrenaline mx real estate B.S..

I'm trying to figure how to mount the top. If I need to drill the bushing or something

That doesn't really explain how to do the top mount. The blaster bolt doesn't fit inyo the EXs top bushing. I'm trying to figure out if I need to drill it out (which seems impossible) or do i need something else?

you cant drill it, it's case hardened, so i was told??
but if you can follow this its not too hard, mine is a 450r but the mounting for an ex is the same................
i just took my 450 shock, and all old bolts and nuts with me to the hardware store, and whatever ya get,try to get stainless stuff, i did, now it'll never rust, and buy a few extra of the washers , dont make 2 trips like i did,
you'll need a smaller diameter bolt for the top, to fit thru the smaller hole in the new shock, you cant drill it, it's too hard of steel, and washers to match that bolt, like 4 or 6 washers for the top, and then the hardest part of the whole install is that you have to make some kind of bushing for the holes in the top mount, i used like a 3/8 or 1/2 inch brass copression coupling thats used for connecting 2 pieces of copper tubing, discard the 2 parts (nuts) that turn, and just use the middle piece, i drilled that out to the size of the new bolt, then put a bolt and nut thru it, kinda tight and spun it in the drill while holding a file to it, till it fit inside my shock mounts on the frame, then cut it to the thickness needed to fill that mount,
the bottom mount only needs the aluminum shock mounts to be drilled to fit your stock pin that came out, dont drill it too big, make sure you use the right size drill bit, or you'll get play in it, and this whole project goes way better with 2 people, i had a hellava time by myself, cause when you take the old shock off, the whole assend falls onto the swingy, i had to make a brace outta a 2 by 4 to hold the ass up while tryin to get this all together, better yet would be to hang it with a tie down strap from the garage ceiling or a tree limb if your outside, cause it try'd to fall and pinch or cut my damn hand off a couple times, it took me a good 4 hours to figure this out and get it done, but you have a good headstart with these directions,

Thats a good write up awk. I followed ya until I got to the compression fitting part, then I got lost. I know you have a how-to floating around with pics, I'll have to dig that up to see them. This might be a dumb question, obviously the 450 shock is better than the 400ex, but what did you have to do so the ass end doesn't stick up so high after the install? I thought I read somewhere about cutting the shock or something? I try to do all my own stuff, but that might be over my head if thats the case. I know you can also buy a lowering kit for rear as well.

the honda's 400ex and 450r are both around 3/4 or 1 inch longer, not enuf to worry about, but the yamaha 450 shock is almost 19" long, thats too much, imo
i never noticed a difference in ride height with the honda 450r, just a big difference in ride quality <<< like a caddilac, im gettin too old to be jarred around , haha
this pic shows how to modify the 3/8 or 1/2 inch compression coupling, < i forget which one, the new bolt will tell you which one to get, just slightly larger in diameter than the bolt, 1/8 to 1/4 inch
take off the 2 nuts(not shown), the red arrow shows to drill out to fit the new smaller diameter bolt, that fits the bushing in the new shock, after drilling out, put a bolt and nut thru this and tighten, put end of bolt in a drill, spin the drill slowly while holding a file to it, file off at least all of the threads, maybe more, both ends, till it becomes small enuf to fit tightly into your stock mounting tabs on the frame, the blue lines show what parts of the coupling that will be used, cut the 2 parts off, making them just wide enuf to fill the space in those 2 tabs, each of mine ended up being about 3/8 inch wide, put these into the tabs, then put the top of the shock up in between the mounting tabs, and fill the space left with washers, evenly for the 400, and offset(more on the kicker side), for the 450, to help clear the frame, its resivour is offset
put the bolt thru and nut on and crank tight, hope that makes sense and helps more
the second pic shows my bike from the front and its not noticably higher in the rear, the seat actually sits almost level, sorry im at my girls and dont have a rear pic here

That's awesome man, +rep to you. This should be stickied or something because I think that'll really help out a lot of the new guys (myself included) coming into the site. Overall, doesn't seem like too bad of a job, something I'd feel confident tackling on my own. Thanks again man, awesome write up.
