how hard is it to install a crank and what do i need to know to perform this job?

Not very hard. Although it does require the use of some special tools to pull the crank into the case there pretty easy to make though if you have access to a welder. other than that just get a clymers manual and follow the directions. Once you get it apart and look at it for a while you'll see that its a pretty simple design.
