my boyfriend traded a kawasaki dirtbike today for a 2001 yamaha blaster. it worked fine so we took it up the mountain. we were only up about 2 hrs. on the way back home, we shut ours off bc we had to help our friend get his quad unstuck. well we got back on ours and it took like three times to start it. its a kick start thingy (please note that i really dont understand quads and things lol) and any other time it started the first try. well once we got it we rode not even 15 seconds i'd say and bam the quad shut off and i got slammed against my bf's back and we stopped. then again it would take more then three times to get it started, then it happened two or three more times before it wouldnt start at all. its a two stroke if that helps any. he thinks its the piston and rings? how long and how much will it take to fix them if its that??

welcome to the forum! the first thing that comes to mind is if it was properly jetted. does the bike have an aftermarket exhaust or airlid removed? what carb and jets are in it? doing a compression test and a leakdown test is a must. these 2 testers arent expensive and should be done from time to time as well as verifying that the jetting is correct. (slickerthanyou member here sells leakdown testers) if it is the piston, a bore to the next size or hone are in order. along with a new piston and or rings. the piston (get a weisco) is about 90 shipped from rjatv.com and the bore is about 50. you will also need a base gasket and reed gaskets. be sure and use oem base gaskets and you can make your reed gaskets from gasket material at auto part store. one of the site sponsors like kenoconnorracing will measure the bore and tell you exactly what size piston your going to need. or if you have a local machine shop that you can take it to. hope to hear about this thing running great again! also be sure to check that its not something simple causing the problem like the tors or parking brake sensors, these can cause some problems as well on these bikes.

Also if it still has oil injection, check to see if there is oil in tank in back under left fender. Check that small hose from right side of motor is attached to carb. Check all wireing connectors are clean and tite. Make sure main ground and coil mount are bare metal and tite. Did you ride thru lots of mud and water? Might be root cause to problem. Clean it off good before you start working on it. Also check switches and look at plug wire and cap. Look closely for any bare wires. After you get it clean first thing to do is check for spark. Last time it stalled was it real easy to kickover or not move at all? Look to see if you got lots of mud/water on air filter.
