I am very new to blasters and rebuilding engines, when should I replace the head on my stock motor.

You mean the cylinder rightt? <<<< Where the position rides in? You don't necessarily need to replace it. Blaster cylinders have over bores and you can over bore the cylinder to the next size along with an oversized piston and rings. Any reputable shop will be able to measure and do this work fory you. A compression test will tell you if you are in need of a "top end rebuild".

yes I did mean the cylinder head... you mentioned a compression test, will and pressure gauge work? also i took the head off and was turning the crank over using the kick start and found that the piston on the down stroke was pushing air up past the piston? I am very new to this but it would seem that the rings are shot.

A compression tester like this..

Is the piston "sloppy" in the cylinder bore? Any scoring on the cylinder wall and or piston? A compression test with a decent compression tester will be the best bet on if the top end needs to be done. I say a "decent" comp tester because cheaper comp testers aren't so reliable and give false low readings.

Test the static compression with a compression tester. Stay away from Harbor freight models. The piston needs to be measured as well as the cylinder. If you have more than .004" of clearance, something needs to be corrected. If the cylinder measures within specifications, ( bore size and taper) you may get away with honing the cylinder and buying a new piston. KOR can provide any service you need Boss.
