i have a leak between my top and bottom end. so i need a new cylinder gasket. Anyone know easiest way to change that?

There is no real easy way. The quickest would be taking the gas tank off rather then taking the whole motor out. Then you can pull the jug straight up through the frame.

You'll have to buy a top end gasket kit $20-$30. You'll have to remove your pipe, carb and head. Unbolt and remove the cylinder and clean up all of the sealing surfaces. Then slide the new gasket and cyinder on the base studs/piston. Torque the base nuts to 20ft.lbs. reinstall the head with new gasket and torque head nuts in sequence to 20ft.lbs. then reinstall the pipe and carb. run 4 heat cycles, lightly reving engine to operating temp and cooling back to room temp. Then retorque cylinder and head nuts to 20ft.lbs.......Done Then I recommend having a leak down test done to ensure that the gasket and seals are good.

wildcard said it all.
def get the whole rebuild kit. don't JUST replace the base gasket cuz then you're gonna have all kinda probs and you'll wind up having to redo all the work again later.
the head gasket and exhaust gaskets in particular. these are crush type gaskets that only get their best seal on the first torquing. once they been untorqued, they lose they're effectiveness.

Can't find a thread on this anywhere and it's been a long time since I've done it but do I need to add any kind of sealant when replacing the head gasket?

Thanks.

No, the head gasket is annealed copper with a double rolled lip. The proper head bolt torque should squish the copper flat taking up any areas of irregularity.

Once the engine has been through a few heat cycles however, you should recheck your base and head nuts for proper torque.

Technically no, but this thread is on the base gasket, not the head gasket. The copper head gasket doesn't require anything other than putting it on, HOWEVER I spray it with Permatex Copper Spray a Gasket anyways just as added peace of mind.
