Transmission

These tranny's are pretty stout and rarely fail themselves, rarely we even see bent shifting forks.

more than likely it's a shift star problem, it can come loose, break, or broken keyway.

or the shift shaft detent flange thingy that rotates the shift star.
if the little springs come out of there resting spot, or fail, the detent will not return to it's nuetral position and the trans will not shift to the next gear.
to test that you can try to manually push the shifter back down after shifting up,
(opposite way (up) for downshifting)
that returns it to the nuetral position and will allow it to shift to the next gear.

you must be rotating the output shaft (front sprocket) or the tires w/ chain on to rotate gear for shifting to work

/\ +1 what he said

I have s motor out of frame put back together i can only shift it into 1st neutral and 2nd and it doesnt turn easily does that sound normal or should i tear back into it?

you didn't check shifting during assembly ?

it helps turning the front sprocket, or if the chain is on, jack up rearend and turn wheels, while trying to shift thru the gears.

either of the above rotates the transmission allowing it to shift easier.

I checked shifting when assembling but now its hard. I put a thick glove on to spin sprocket and shifts through all gears problem solved thanks.
