These tranny's are pretty stout and rarely fail themselves, rarely we even see bent shifting forks.
more than likely it's a shift star problem, it can come loose, break, or broken keyway.
or the shift shaft detent flange thingy that rotates the shift star.
if the little springs come out of there resting spot, or fail, the detent will not return to it's nuetral position and the trans will not shift to the next gear.
to test that you can try to manually push the shifter back down after shifting up,
(opposite way (up) for downshifting)
that returns it to the nuetral position and will allow it to shift to the next gear.
you must be rotating the output shaft (front sprocket) or the tires w/ chain on to rotate gear for shifting to work
