what could cause the transmission to jump out of gear and what can make it hard to shift up but not down

A number of things. We need more info.

  • Have you recently had the casings apart?
  • What transmission oil do you run?
  • have you checked your transmission oil?
  • How does your clutch feel? (floppy/tight/non functional)
  • Did you experience anything unusual (Clunk/bang/lock up/bent shift fork)?

Jumping out of gear could be related to the shift star and its mechanism, but give some info and I can help you further.

Jumping out of gear is usually worn engagment dogs "gears" in the transmission , hard to shift is possibly a bent shift shaft, worn shift drum or shift forks. try checking your oil level and the condition of the oil.

Start by removing the right hand side clutch cover. That means kickstarter etc.

  • Remove spark plug, jack the back wheels off the ground and roll them forward, while doing so, see if you can shift into all 6 gears and down to 1st again
  • Remove the shift shaft
  • Inspect the shaft for a bend
  • Inspect shift star for worn/damaged teeth
  • Pull clutch lever and watch to see if the clutch plates are moving (engaging/disengaging)

If all is well there but you cannot find gears, you going to have to dive deeper and spilt the cases and investigate worn or bent shift forks.
