I don't know a ton about engines but I know the basics and I was wondering if I should rebuild the engine myself and save some money or should I take it to a shop and have them rebuild the top end just to be safe so I don't mess something up.

if you are up for the challenge you can probobly do it.. you need a flywheel puller, case splitter, flywheel holder and crank puller. with the tools you can rebuild it at about the same cost as you would spend to get someone else to do it for you but you will have the tools to do it yourself again if you dont get it right the first time :)
edit: im sorry for the topend only you just need to take it to a machine shop and have them measure and possibly rebore along with a new piston. definitly can do it yourself though. watch kens vidio on installing a topend.

I was just afraid that I rebuild the top end and within a short while it blow up because I forgot to do a something or didn't know to do something very simple.

Just do your homework on it, use the search option. When you tackle it don't be afraid to ask questions or post up pics. The whole tear down of it can be done in less than an hour. Take the cyclinder to a shop, put new piston in and you're good to go after a leakdown test and a few plug chops
