For a piston to come out of a cylinder looking like yours does, there was obviously a problem with a way too lean a mixture.

Could have been caused by a jetting discrepancy or from and air leak.

Perform a leak test after engine assembly before you start it.

Investigate if the jetting is suitable for your mods!

Same style piston that came outta it.....works better then my old 03
Don't see how you can say that's the same "style" that came out of it?

Hope you insured the ports had proper chamfering, especially exhaust, and you washed it well to get all machining residue out. Has been issues with these A.M. cyls.

Did you leak test before tear down?
Be sure to leakdown test before start-up.

You WILL have to increase main jet. As mentioned this piston is almost like having jug ported.
Did a totally bone stock with Vito's super stock piston and went up to a 260 main.

Were it me I would have smoothed that notch on the piston a bit.
