just wondering what tool i need to measure to see what size parts i need for top end rebuilds. cheap is good but im guessing a tape measure isnt my best bet
an quality accurate BORE gauge is pricy like 100+ bucks...and it sadly is the only way to measure your bore accurately. Calipers are not the way to go for this kind of measuring since it is impossible to measure anywhere but pretty much the top and bottom rims and even then you dont know if your going straight across the cylinder. They are ok for estimating but not good for precision, just take it to a machine shop and they will measure it prolly for free if not like 5 bucks with the proper tool
yeah you can use a vernier caliper, inside micrometer, there are so many ways, hell i can measure it with a tape measure, then switch it over to mm's not too hard
no offense smoker but if you think holding a tape measure across the top of the cylinder is remotely close to accurate your wrong...people measure cylinders to determine bore sizes...which are in 20 thou increments...so you need to be accurate to at least 10 thousandths....if you can read a tape measure to the 1/100th of an inch i am damn impressed lol
Isnt the bore supposed to have a very slight taper? That can't exactly be measured using a caliper. The bore gauge would be ideal for the bore measurement, but the caliper should be good for the other measurements.
The way we do aircraft cylinders is use a T gauge and measure at different points in the cylinder to make sure the cylinder is even and you measure the T gauge with a micrometer.
And yes the cylinder tapers as you go up from the bottom.
