Alright heres the problem. I have a 1995 rm 125 and it wont start now. I know its not a blaster but still 2 stroke so i was hoping to get some help. I rebuilt the top end and it ran perfect aside from not ideling. One day i rolled off the throttle and the bike shut down like it always did and it wont start. Granted i am not running the 30 dollar NGK racing plug in it but im looking for other possible issues. All it does now is ill kick it four or 5 times and then itll back fire. Any ideas? Crank seal making it rich? Exhuast valve malfunction? Just a sh*tty plug? I need help

flywheel key stripped.

There are no valves on a 2 stroke to cause it to "backfire". That's flame shooting out of the intake window while the piston is out of position.

Stop doing that before you blow the crankcase seals out.

So you would start with the flywheel? how do you fix that just get a new key for it and replace it? DO the flywheelers have a set postion that they need to be in when i reinstall?

I would check over lots of the common problems. Check the reeds, check the flywheel key, check the spark plug and spark plug boot. Any of those can cause your problems but backfiring sounds like a flywheel key.

The flywheel key indexes and aligns the flywheel to the crankshaft. It cannot be split and spun. If it is, you have to replace the key and lap the tapered sections of the flywheel and crankshaft. The taper is what actually holds the flywheel to the crank, the key just aligns it for installation.

alright i get what your saying and the plug boot is good plug is not 100% correct for the bike but it worked before i have the right one ordered and the reeds are brand new. Thanks for the help!!

agreed. ^^^^^^^ timing issue. a new plug will do itjustice as well. also the weather is getting warmer = time to rejet

Read the jetting help stickies in the engine section.

Colder air is more dense and denser air has more oxygen in it. More oxygen needs more fuel to keep the engine happy.

As the temperautres rise (going into Spring now) the jets need to get slightly smaller. Next fall, the jets need to get slightly larger

alright yeah i understand. And then lets just say i pul it apart and the flywheel is fine do i try to adjust timing on the stator or is there another possible issue that you would look at first

If the flywheel and key are fine when you pull it apart, it's got another issue. You need to look elsewhere.

Carburetor cleaning, checking out to make sure the reeds didn't slip, leakcheck to make sure you didn't develop a massive air leak.
