well, got the lowerend together right this time...shifts correctly...but the shifting seems sloppy. like the hooks that catch the shift star aren't fully catching everytime, more so when u downshift....any cures for this? or just buy a new shift shaft? what's worn that does this?

In the shifter connector, at the end, there is a geared pin shaft and the gear fitting cutout in the shift lever itself, usually it is the shifter lever opening that strips. Investigate to confirm it is this, then either crank it a little tighter with a good set screw installed or replace.

Also be sure it is not the shaft that is stripped/rolled, coming out of the gear box, if so shaft will need to be replaced as well.
