To replace the headgasket does the gas tank have to be removed? Also how many bolts are there holding the head down?

If that gasket is leaking you may want to check the head an the top of the jug for straightness, cause the copper or metal head gaskets dont really just blow

at least a stock blaster is easier to work on than mine...lol if you need to remove the pipe, than at least it isn't difficult.

When you get the head of you should lap it.. Also look at the head and gasket where it blew to see how bad the warping is.. Lapping the head will true a small warpage.. Remember not to take too much off. There is a video somewhere that shows the lapping of a 2 stroke or blaster head.. It's very easy to do.. A piece of glass on a flat surface, some fine grit sand paper or lapping compound, a few minutes of time and some elbow grease. You can also use a power drill (to spin the actual head) but I prefer manual labor because you can control it more..

I'm not sure what caused it to fail but it is leaking, I'm just taking the head off and not the whole jug, I ordered an oem copper gasket and plan on replacing it.

So if I'm just taking the head off, does the tank have to be removed?

if your already having a problem with the head gasket. You dont want to do a crappy job by not taking the gas tank off.Just take the tank off and get it done,it is only 4 10mm bolts, and losing the screws on the nose plastic and pulling the gas line off carb.when i do mine i use a small magnetic screwdriver to get the washers off and on .It will help alot cuz it is a tight fit:)

The answer is yes and no.

The tank does not have to be removed to remove the head.

Some exhaust pipes require removal as the fit very close to the head.

It is a good idea to remove the tank as it makes taking the head off so much easier.

There is also the element of cleanliness with no crap above the work area there is little chance of crap falling in.

It would be a great idea to have the head machined or lapped as it not normal for a head gasket to just start leaking, I would suspect over heating, poor fitting up or use of an old gasket.

The vid jus_me posted is informative but try to use more of a figure of 8 motion when doing it.

Alright, I guess I'll remove the tank first. I'll take a look at that video when I get home. My exhaust is the stock one as far as I know.

Do I only have to lap the head, or the cylinder also?

check if it is warped first, before you go lapping. Read up on it maybe.you cant lap the cylinder unless you were to remove the studs. I really dont think you want to go that far.:)
