hi everyone first time bike owner.brother gave me 1999 blaster.what purpose do reed valves serve and should i replace.

the reeds are a very important part of a 2 stroke if they are bad it will run like complete sh*t and sometimes not run at all.
If you go the route of replacing the reeds the best you can get a V-Force 3 Reeds, Then V-Force 2 reeds, then boyesen. boyesen reeds will be the cheapest and V-Force 3s would be the most expensive hope this helps

thanx the bike runs fine. i just want to get in dependable shape so want to replace things.v-force give more power or anything.
V-force reeds will give you tons more power over stock. Next to exhaust and porting upgrades they are the best mod you can get in terms of power
the function of the reeds are kind of like valves in a four stroke but controlled by the pull and push of gasses by the piston not by a cam shaft. it's like a flap that closes when pushed on and opens when pulled on
I would use the blue gasket sealer along with the gasket to avoid a leak. I read they tend to leak if not.
