could bad reeds cause a two stroke engine not to start? such as like an air leak would do?

If they were really bad absolutely !

Usually when reeds are bad/worn it will cause the motor to sputter and stall out when given gas ... Depending on how bad they are it could definitely effect the motors ability to start at all. Have you checked the reed petals ?

Had that problem when I bought my blaster. Wouldn't start for nothing till I replaced the reeds.

If the reeds are poor the fair fuel charge will be expelled into the intake tract and not forced up the transfers.
