I am currently in college but will be moving to a place with a two car garage over the summer. I've got a ton of tools that need a better home than the sh*tty plastic thing they came in. The tools are good so I won't need to replace them but I want a good tool chest. Most of you guys have tools I know so figured that you would have suggestions for a cheaper starting tool chest. I am looking at getting a bottom roller first. Would kinda like to keep it within 300 but we'll see. Been looking around at craftsmen but I would rather not get a 26 inch, want something closer to 40. What does anyone think? Would a 26 inch craftsmen do the trick until I get out of school? Just wondering, trying to build the perfect garage for a young guy and on a budget.

Going to build the work table so that isn't an issue. I:I

get the 40" you'll be a lot happier in the long run and it'll be cheaper in the long run because you won't be wishing you had a bigger box.....well not right away

I love my 41" Craftsman setup, but if oyu want something to last I would recommend getting something with ball bearings... The more weight I put into a drawer the smoother they open.

However, its difficult to get something that size for that price unless you hit the sales... If you want Craftsman toolboxes I suggest joining Craftsman club and watching the sales... You can save a ton !

I was actually looking at that exact one. I wasn't real sure that it would fit my tools though. For Christmas my girlfriend went to sears and got me a 248 piece mechanics set or something like that and I already had a decent amount of tools to begin with from my dad and whatnot. I'd also like room for some powertools. Nothing big but I am going to be getting a saw and drill and a dremel tool and would like a place to put them.

I didn't know about the craftsman club. How much would I be looking at paying for a 40 inch bottom alone without a combo? I don't mind waiting for a sale either.

I found this one on the site after signing up for the craftsmen club. It seems large enough to hold my stuff and has a large bottom drawer to hold any other power tools that I get. Plus it's ball bearings, I'll probably end up going with this combo. Seems like the best choice, but if you guys think differently let me know.

Thats the same one YB showed you except it was red and $50 cheaper.

I dunno bout you but I picked up 2 of these at Kmart. At $85 a piece It seemed like it was more room. Cheaper Too. I got them side by side and its I believe over 50 inches wide. I was on a budget also and this works good.

I used to have a 40" rollcab and box combo , back when I was a mechanic and the problem is you NEVER have enough room , you see that empty space and think of something to stick in there . I sold that thing and Now I have a 30" Husky top and bottom combo , and a couple of carry type boxes as well . I only put in the rollcab what I use on cars and quads . so its all right there . I scored a old steel cabinet from a fixture sale , its 6 feet tall , about 12 " wide and has 5 compartments in it , tall and narrow , but is great for powertools and other stuff you don't use as much . Maybe this would be a good post for the picture section , give you some ideas .

The one that I linked has ball bearing drawers which is probably something I'll get if I go that route. I may get the cheap one though, that's not a bad idea. Then just get rid of it and upgrade later. Also I just thought to check CL for that type of thing as well. Maybe I can find a decent used one that isn't too beat up.

well i know this might get flammed but my bro went to sams clud an bought a 40 top an bottom stainless steel box with ball bearing drawers for 580 about 5 years ago an it still works great..... they are like 650 now... its a lil more then what u wanted to spend but i like get off everytime i go into his garuge an see the bright stainless steel box.. lol an then after that he went an spent 2400 on just a bottom thats 62" an is lke 6 foot long... its yellow an has the rat fink decals all over it. super sexy

I have something similar to the first link. Actually have a two piece and a three piece 26" craftsman. If I would have had the $ at one time I would have got a good new craftsman or used snap on bottom. I am happy with the 2 though. I got 2 matching tall locking filing cabinets for my big tools. I put one on each side of the 2 pcs box and made a shelf for my 33 gallon horizontal compressor to set on. 2" tall acoustic foam blocks keeps the vibes down. I was able to get the cabinets for free too. Even have room to keep all my atv and car magazines in them.

Check these boxes out. They have a 41 for about 1000 shipped. or you can just buy the bottum for around 700 including shipping. When you look at tool boxes check out the weight of the box in the specs. Tells alot about how heavy its made.
Those Montezuna boxes are the best bang for the buck on the market.

I roll with a 40" snap on top and bottom. It works great. I got it for $900 used from the Matco guy. I didnt think that was too bad. I dont think its nearly big enough. It doesnt matter what you get it wont be big enough. I use a 50" Mac top and bottom at work and is overflowing with sh*t now...

A great place to look for a quality box is the tool guys. They always seem to have a good assortment of boxes that they have taken on trade ins. A buddy of mine just picked up a 3 bay craftsman pro for cheap. Its a 52 or 58 inch chest. Got it for $650. They usually have small ones also. Just stop and ask.

If you must get craftsman atleast get a roller bearing box!

Get the absolute biggest box you can afford!

We had a craftsman box top and bottom with the bearings. Held up great even after my mom dumped it forward onto the floor when it was full of tools. all the drawers were bent and looked unfixable. after a few hours of straightening it back out it works like brand new now. Def recommended !

I'm going to go with a 26 inch box. It is small but for now, until college is over and there is a bigger garage, it should work really well and hold all my stuff. The garage we are getting is small for a 2 car garage and both my girlfriend and I have trucks so there won't be a ton of room as it is. May have to park one outside after the blaster and bike go in. So a 26 for now is good. I am getting the ball bearing drawers though. Thanks for all the input fella's, helped out a lot.
