It's perfectly fine. I went up to a 14 tooth simply because I was sick of constantly going back and forth through 1-4 so quickly. I still get kind of annoyed by it, but I don't think it's a solvable issue unless I dig into the tranny and start playing with a new way of dicking with ratios through 1-3 and I'm not really that interested in doing that.
It's just one of those things you can't everything of like most anything else. If you want the top speed/wider shift ratios(less shifting), then go up in front, down in rear. If you like a lot of bottom end acceleration but more shifting, go down in front, and up in rear. MX riders have to make this decision every race and use like 10 different setups depending how much they want to shift, how they want to come out turns, and what gear they feel most comfortable entering or leaving turns. Only way you can tell is by trying it.
