Quick fix kicker gear

You might have debris where it slides into place, teeth missing off the gear (rare) or a weak spring.
Pull the cover and have a look see.

I would do just what Paulie said...........

It is very easy to do.

^^2nd Paulie^^ The cover comes right off afted draining the oil, removing the kicker lever, and undoing 8 bolts. Usually, a kick starter that won't always engage has a broken or damaged pinion gear guide clip. Cheap and easy fix.

Here's a tip: If you warm the engine up first, and give the side cover a firm whump with a rubber mallet right in the center (after removing the bolts), the cover will often pop free and leave the gasket stuck to the case in one piece. The cover can then be put back on later without having to buy a new gasket. I hate re-using gaskets, but if you don't break it... shouldn't be a problem here.

Hells if you don't even want to change the oil just lean you blaster over on it's side.

I always thought once the gasket has been torqued and then the cover is removed the gaskets seal in not good anymore even if the gasket doesnt rip?

its good practice to replace them but usually thats only true with things like head gaskets and stuff that are a little more finicky

mine was acting up, i had to play with the kicker just to get it to grab, then it just stopped workin altogether and i pulled the clutch cover, and there is the main spring and there is that little black thing like a bent up spring, that helps it return that's what broke on mine and i replaced it and it works great..
