Problems with my petcock

Along with my Blaster I have a couple Honda's (I know, I know, don't hate me though). One is a 250x and the other a 300ex, both are pretty much stock and both these machines run fine but will ONLY do so with the petcock in the "reserve" position, when I turn it to the "on" position they will run for a minute then die. It really sucks because I will run out of gas even though the tank is more than half full. Please help me out guys...

I've seen the screens in the tanks rot away. I think it's due to the fact the screen will most of the time be exposed to the open air( too low of a gas level) and rot with the moisture in the tank. The reserve screen is much lower and usually under liquid most of the time.
