more than likely a broken reed, or sheared woodruff key on the stator
start with pulling the carb, intake and reeds to give them a look
then you'll need a flywheel puller for our bikes, to get the flywheel off to inspect the keyway

But seriously, do you have spark and fuel?
Do you have compression?
Does the motor still turn over?
Was the smoke dense, white and smelly?

hows the air filter ? clean ?
carb clean ?
excessive smoking is sometimes a blown cranlk seal
check your transmission oil level, if it is suddenly down on oil, time for a leakdown test
