Now this might be a crazy question, but if I was to repaint my engine on my blaster black, is there any kind of special paint to use? Do you just use the engine paint you find at the auto parts stores? Call me crazy, but I would think that the engine would transfer heat better if it was unpainted but its like that from the factory...

Thanks

Or you could use that high-temp stuff you put on your bbq grill I:I

Haha just kiddin I don't really know. But I know it's black, and you could take a flame to it and not have it erode..

Ok thats good to hear! I don't remeber what temp bbq paint is rated at, but I think its close to the temp of the engine paint. Do air cooled two strokes get super hot? I know they can burn the s*** out of you, but is the temp anything close to that of a car engine?

i would just get some high temp paint or if you have the money get it powder coated, with the high temp powder.. i think they get around 250 F..

I used some paint I found at Auto Zone. I believe the brand was VHT and it had flames and a header on the can. Works up to 1600F according to the can.. It seems to work fine, and it even resisted a gasoline spill at one point. Pic below.

PS, nice turbine for the SR btw.

Thanks! Looks like we have an fello SR fan? Its the GT2871R and I'm in the middle of putting it on my car along with a big bunch of other goodies I have been buying over the past year (until the blaster died that is) I hope to have it up and running the start of 09.

For the paint, I haven't used the VHT header paint, but I have used some like it on the exhaust housing of my stock SR turbo (painted it silver/gray) and it held up for the past 2 years with out messing up the paint which is good since I know turbos get pretty hot.

I'm going to the parts store later today and see what I can find for colors and heat temp. since it was said the engine gets up to around 250 and since I cant justify powder coating the engine right now eventhough it would look badass!

Yea there was a time when I used to play with a 91 hatch, with a red top sr swap. All stock pretty much, but still fun as hell to slide around.

As for the temp I assume it will be a bit worse in the long run. The thicker the paint you spray on, the less effective the cooling will get.

agreed, i would have to say paint is a thermal insulator, but one coat obviously isn't going to destroy your engine cause they did it from the factory, but you may want to strip the old paint off first. and definately use something high temp.

my friend has an s14 with a disco potato in it, runnin 16psi 315hp at the wheels. he can only get 13.3 out of it in the quarter tho cause he has no traction and no money to upgrade from stock tires, then he rear ended someone with it :( so now he's gonna spend whatever money he gets on an s15 front end conversion since its smashed anyhow.

^^Hell yeah, thats badass fellow 240 guys! I have all of this going into an s13 hatch, and I know all about not getting traction!

With the engine, I'll plan on striping it down and spraying it with engine paint rated at 500 I picked up from Advanced Auto.
