Oil pump or pre mix?

I just bought a 04 blaster and have heard the oil pump needs to be bypassed. Can anyone help with this issue? What ratio should I mix the gas? Any info would help thanks.

You can run the risk of using the oil pump. As long as you keep the inside of the tank and lines clean you should have no problems. But for some people we don't mind premixing, so if there is a lack of oil, its user error, not left to chance by the machine. It is recommended to run at 20:1, but most people run just fine at 32:1 for the blasters.

32:1 works well under most situations with most oils. Some oil makers state a different ratio which should be adhered to.

There are a couple of reasons folks choose premix,

1, the plastic gear on the pump is not trusted.

2, it allows a choice of oil which cannot be used for injection.

3, if you flip the bike the oil injection has to be bled.

4, you can remove the bulky tank and save weight

5, you can use a carby that does not cater for oil injection.

There are possibly a few more. :)

6, stops 4 pokers borrowing fuel.

bypass the oil pump and pre-mix ....remove the oil tank cut the hoses coming out the oil pump cover ...now goto the carb you need a nipple to block air from going into the carb, you can leave like 3/4in of the old hose and put a screw in it or goto the auto parts store and buy a small nipple or what I did make up a little jb weld and stuff in there ....run 32:1 premix

I don't support this method, could vibrate off or be blasted off by a pressure washer.

I have had my blaster for almost 4 years now done almost 3000 km on it
fliped it twice most of the time under mud filled conditions, been useing
shell part-syntetic oil WITH OIL Injection and not a problem yet !
Mostly i ride hard trails and almost allways at WOT

Never faild to start easy (cold or warm) !

Just last week opend the seat and found the airbox half filled with muddy water ! (drain pipe was clooged with mud) and still no problem !

The bike is street legal so it's more convienent to use the pump .
I think if you modd the bike a lot pre-mix is preferable but if mostly stock
then the oil injection is just fine
Just my 2c

If the pump were adjustable and a metal gear were available it would be ok. Banshees suffer a simular problem with plastic gear and impellor on waterpump.

Its your choice...I got rid of the oil injection on my Blaster when I got it, but the system works well enough and it won't give you trouble if you take care of it properly. I suppose the plastic oil pump drive gears CAN break, but I've never seen one do so and plastic is a lot stronger than most people think. All of your Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engines and many of the newer Honda units have plasic camshaft drive gears and they just don't shatter for no reason.

If you get rid of the oil injection, just buy a blockoff plate kit and do it right the first time. SO easy and you never have to worry. Don't forget to re-jet the carb by bumping the main up one size when you're done.

^^^^The clay/sand mix of the MX tracks we ride on deposit a formidable mud which cakes hard and calls for a powerful pressure cleaner.

I have to be careful around gaskets as the water jet can tear them out.

I also like to have things done right and a length of hose with a screw stuck in the end, just don't seem right to me. :)

There's really nothing wrong with the injection system, however, you can tune the bike a little better and get a little more HP out of it using pre-mix. If you're not familiar with jetting of a 2stroke and pre-mixing, I'd stick with the injection system for a while....at least until you get more familiar with running a 2stroke.

Talking to a mechanic at the yamaha dealership near me he said that he'd never seen a blaster with the oil injection come in with a blown top end....only ones he'd seen with blown top ends had the injection system blocked off.

I got two blasters from a friend who didn't use them anymore and had not taken care of them at all - he didn't know how and didn't care to. They had been sitting for years out under a tarp. I tore the motors apart thinking that they'd need new top ends....the pistons and cylinders were immaculate. The pre-mix runs you at 24:1 I believe, which is a little rich on the oil ratio, however, it prevents people who have no clue about what they're doing from blowing up motors!! Since I've owned them I've blocked off the injection and had good results.
