I was out riding this evening and I noticed that the trans didn't want to down shift unless I let out on the clutch a little while shifting. It has never done this before, I used to be able to go from 6th to 1st by just pulling the clutch and shifting. WTF?

If you take off your clutch cover there is a little wheel with a spring that puts tension on the star mechanism. More then likely the spring has come off. I had the same issue with mine

Well thats what I was thinking, something with the shift mechanism. I just went out to see if I could figure something out and I shifted it through all the gears while rocking it back and fourth and everything felt good. So while it was in first I grabbed the clutch and rolled it back, and it wouldn't roll. I assume the clutch is gone.

without the engine running, the clutch won't seem to disengage. Mine would shift through the gears just fine when the engine wasn't running either

hopefully it just slipped out of the groove and you can just hook it back up, otherwise it'll need to be replaced. good luck with it

I tore it down, checked the springs, checked the clutch, and it all looked good. The only thing I could find was a little in/out play in the shifter shaft. I don't know what the heck is going on.

the shift shaft is supposed to have a little play in it.
well, if the spring looks good, did you shift through the gears while you had the cover off? maybe you'll be able to see where the malfunction is....
if not, then try adjusting the clutch play. push the arm all the way forward w/ your finger and if the little point on the arm doesn't line up to the mark on the case then adjust the phillips screw in the middle of the clutch.

Im not exactly following you on the clutch arm, should I release the clutch cable from the lever first so that it does not interfere, and then align the marks using the adjuster screw?
