Hey guys im new here, looking for some guidance....

I have never owned a 2 stroke before but have owned lots of trikes and quads with 4 strokes....

Im looking at buying a blaster tomorrow guy said it needs a piston, i am gonna get a top end kit for it, what is involved in the process, never done this but my brother inlaw has and is going to help me tackle it if i buy the quad.... I know we gotta pull the head and all that, but will it need any other machining or anything like that? Whats your opinions?

Much appreciated!!

It'll need bored over to the next size and honed, along with having all the ports cleaned up some to get the sharp edges off. I'd recommend a wiseco piston for it, just my preference. Overall, a topend rebuild isn't very hard at all especially if you have someone who knows what they are doing helping you.

Hello and welcome to the site bro.

The top end on the Blaster is a piece of cake. Get yourself a manual and read it over.

As for machine work that you might need done, you will find out when you take the head and jug off.

Any help you need just ask.

Thanks for the awesome info guys, really appreciate it!!

Any advice to watch out for or things to look for while im looking at this bike before i buy it, it wont start with the bad piston obviously, but what else should i be looking for while looking it over? I:I

shake the wheels and look for play in the front wheel bearings along with a-arm play, check the brakes, rock the 4 wheeler while stasnding on it and check for rear axle play and swing arm play by the mount, lift the front end onto the rear fender/ grab bar and check the fram for bends /breaks and if the stator cover is off grab the fly wheel and shake it ther should be no play...mater of fact bring a big phillips head screw driver and insist on taking the stator cover off and do this...if there is play thats another $200 for the bottom end +/- what deals you can find

check the chain and sprockets and prop the back of the wheeler up and spin the rear wheels and check for bent axle/ bent rims

lastly look for jack ass repairs to things if found you can be assured the rest is crap!!

pull the seat and check the filter is a good way of telling how it was cared for

good luck bro

just cos it needs a piston doesnt mean it needs a rebore? pull the head off and cylinder and see if its worn, usualy you will have some scoring around cylnder bore near the ports mostly the exhaust port if these are deep it will need a rebore and a piston kit to suit. wiseco pistons are good ive used them before many times with dirt bikes. you may find the cylinder is ok or has minor scoring, if this is the case and your on a budget, i usualy take any coarse scoring down with emery cloth then hone the cylinder with a 3 stone hone on an electric drill. just untill it breaks the 'glaze' and turns a good machined sort of matt silver colour. i use usualy use thin releasing oil or ''wd40'' to lubricate the hone, but ive heard some guys use brake fluid.
loads of guys are probably cringing at the thought of this but it works fine, i once built a diesel engine up for a work colleague, he bought the car accident damage, it had been run empty of engine oil. to cut a long story short i ended up picking peices of piston ally out of scores on the cylinder bores where the pistons were picking up on them from lack of oil, then literaly scrubbing down the score marks with coarse emery cloth and gave the bores a good honing. cleand the piston skirts with wet n dry, new rings and shells. running like a swiss watch. yes i know a little 2 stroke is different than a oily diesel but it worked on my past bikes....hate away lol.I:I

Thanks alot guys, im outta time right now but ill post up some pics later tonight hopefully.... Picked it up for pretty much nothing with a ton of extra parts too!! I:II:II:I
