Hi everyone, My name is Jimmy, 27 yrs old, from Belleville Illinois (outside St.Louis) love 4 wheelers but this is the first i've owned.

I just picked up a 1988 Blaster for 200 bucks. Figured it was a good deal, it ran like complete crap and took about 25 kicks to get it started, then bogged down a lot and had little power, and blew out a ton of white smoke.

So I changed the oil, put in a new spark plug, cleaned a HUGE nest out of the air filter, pulled the carb apart and cleaned everything with carb cleaner. Pit it all back together, checked that she has good compression and now it starts up on the first kick and runs really well now, nice power and no smoke!

She needs a little more TLC but that will come with time. Where is the best place to buy parts? I need new front wheel bearings, and front control arm bushings. Plus some new tires and wheels since the fronts are a bit bent up.

In South county St. Louis, there's a Yamaha dealer that stocks almost everything for the blaster. Its Donelson Cycles. Of course they are dealer prices ($$$) but if you need something quick that's the place to go. I just got my blaster last weekend. Needed a new top end, but the piston skirt shattered so I have to split the bottom end.

Thanks guys. I'll check out some of those sites.

QUESTION: If you could only do one mod that isn't insanly expensive on a old 88 Blaster what would it be. Like I said i'm new to 4 wheelers. I've ridden 4 wheelers since I was a kid but they were always a friends so I never had to much involvement past just riding them. I was thinking a pipe or something like that a sproket? If so which one? Preferably something I can do that won;t take to much down time.

QUESTION # 2 : Are most blaster parts interchangable or do I have to get specific 1988 parts? For instance would the front shocks on a 2000 blaster bolt up to the shocks on my 88, physically they look the same but I just wasen't sure.

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks everyone.
UPDATE:
So the TORS is already disconnected on it. I just purchased a 14t front sprocket, new rear tires, wheel bearings, A arm bushings, and some new handle bar grips. I got a little fiesty over the weekend and tore the blasty all apart. I'm painting everything from the frame up, going to powerwash it since I don't have access to a sand blaster, then prep it with some fine grit sand paper or a scotch pad, primer it gray, and rattle can paint it, then go over with a few coats of clear coat. I took some before pictures i'll post later, not to complicated to tear apart, it's been a lot fo work though painting everything. I'm trying to make it look good while spending as little as possible. Down the road i'll get a nicer blaster, but for now the 88 is in works, I think it'll look pretty good when i'm done....

welcome to the forum. the 88 is fine, a nice blaster is all in what you put into it. i have seen some 80's and 90's that look better that the 04-06's. also try blasterzone.com and ebay. the shocks will bolt right up. the only major diff in the 88-02 and 03-07 is the rear axle disign. but if you want i have a +4 LSR axle for sale...welcome again
