Need new piston

I just did a top end rebuild, all new parts. Like an idiod and rushing things, I never thought to check the oil injection system. As expected, I blew a hole throug the top of the piston. Question #1 : The rings seem fine. Is it ok to use them again? Question #2 : Funds are limited until I go back to work in March. What is the cheapest piston for now until I can build it up right this summer?

I wouldnt suggest gettin a cheap piston!!!!

I would just get a wisco forge piston kit myself....

Like I said, I don't want to go cheap and half-ass it but I'd like to ride it a little bit until I go back to work. I live in SC and work in MI so I won't get much time for riding or tinkering this summer. Like a kid at xmas, i just wanna play with my new toy.

I hear you but getting a cast piston can be more harmfull if something was to go wrong

Try a Vertex piston. I put one in mine last year and no problems. They go on ebay for $67 + shipping. It sounds like you have some kind of lean condition if you have a hole in the top of your piston. Oil starvation would seize the piston to the walls. Could also be an ignition problem. Just bypass the pump and premix 32 : 1.

Thanks for the advice/links. I think I'll just wait and do it right the first time. One more question. With the hole burnt in the top of the piston, do I need to worry about any metal shavings or debris in the motor?

you should look down in the crank and see if there is debris. Also rotate the crank too check fir smooth rotation. I think the hole in your piston is burned in meaning melted. Is the dome in the head ok? Also how are the cylinder walls?

I checked all that and figured the same thing. It was melted. I pulled the oil hose off the carb and kicked it. No oil coming out = bad oil injection system, right? Also smooth crank rotation and clean cylinder walls. It appears the only damage was to the piston. The dome does look like it could be cleaned up a little.

then you should be good for just a piston and rings and removing the oil injection
