OK heres the short version of my blaster situation. IM 40 yrs old unemployed and have limited funds and mechanical experience. I have all the knowledge of this site and couple youtube videos. My blasters engine is off the bike and on my work bench. Experience wise I have done a couple blaster top end rebuilds before. But my blaster appears to have clutch/tranny problems. I opened clutch side and all appears to be there and non broken. Off course i dont know what im looking for. I can shift only up to third gear (that cant be good ) and i dont know if the clutch is working right either. I pull the clutch forward and shift it seems the same if i dont pull the lever. Anyway sorry for the long post should i try to split the cases myself All i have at the moment is a harbor freight 48 piece bolt puller set or what would i be looking at spending to take the motor somewhere or someone to fix. thanks for any ideas. It just kills me to have a nice 2005 blaster sitting in my garage for the summer and do nothing with it. I have all the time in the world just limited resourses. P.S its my 12 year olds bike even though i ride the blaster more than he does. He likes his kx 85 more lol

The cost at a local shop is going to depend on there teardown labour costs and hourly shop rate: I would ask around. If you could get some good pics of the engine side and the clutch we may be able to spot what the issue is:

Hey .. I have some video files I have made of my TOTAL rebuild.. Its actually step by step for right down to change every bearing, installing crank, assembly of tranny etc..

I would be happy to give you my material .. ( 2 hours!) so you can study and get some idea if you wanna go for it?

when i did my motor back in jan./feb. i considered doing the bottom end myself, but it seemed that i needed like $100+ in special flywhell/crankshaft pullers, so i called the local shop - "ebensburgh yamaha", and they split my cases and installed all my new parts
crank/bearings/seals and top end for $110 labor, good deal i thought
but i had some tranny troubles like yours before on my '96, and it ended up being something inside, shift star/fork???, not the clutch, sounds internal to me

cheapest is if you do it yourself. take the time to learn and you will always be able to save lots of money and do it on your own terms. start looking for used tools on ebay to save money buying them new or other atv sites people might be selling. if you learn the blaster A LOT of the knowledge gained will transfer to your kx85 also and a lot of other 2 strokes. get a manuel and also if first time and have a digi camera then take pictures as you go to help you reassemble for reference.good luck

Look at it this way. There are some DUMB people, and stoned-out punk kids that have totally rebuilt a blaster engine. So ask yourself....do they have something you don't? It's not a nuclear reactor. It's a very simple engine, and it doesn't take an SAE certification to work on one. You are unemployed? That means time isn't an issue. Put that time to work for you. You might get to where you can even make a few bucks on the side repairing other peoples stuff, or picking up a project bike or quad, repairing it, and flipping it for money, or something you can use. Knowledge is power....and best of all, it's free.
