not many people run a K&N filter because they are made of paper elements.

WUT? Where did you get this info? They are made of a gauze type material. K&Ns with outerwears is all I have ever run on everything. You spray them with K&N cleaner, wait 20 minutes and rinse them with water to clean them. I'm sure K&N wouldn't recommend rinsing them with water if it was going to deteriorate the filter media.
