Leaky shifter seal, shifting issues

I'm rebuilding the motor, getting it ported, and replacing the seals (maybe)...

Question is, I know the shifter is supposed to have some play back and forth, but why on the clutch side it there this thick BLACK sludge...

Also the shifter seal is leaking. Is this indention shown in the pics, supposed to be there? Or am I just being paranoid?

You can replace that seal around the shaft. I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, except mine was leaking really bad. Replaced seal and now it is good.
