If you e been following my threads, you know I picked up a 2004 Blasty in great shape. Unfortunately, I didn't know squat about 2-strokes and had an air leak and burned the motor up. As advised by so many, I got a leak down tester before I tore it down.

Leak test results:

Leak from left (shifter side) cover.

Question: now what?

you'll need to replace the crank seal under the flywheel/stator.
might as well buy a set and replace the clutch side too.

then repeat the leakdown test

Since I don't have the head off yet, what likely failed with the air leak? Or can we not estimate the damage until the head is off?

Is there a special tool to remove the flywheel/stator?

yes....flywheel tool:
Tusk Flywheel Fly Wheel Puller 27mm Tool New Yamaha Blaster 200 1988?2006 | eBay

and you should have one of these impact screwdrivers for removing any of the stock phillips engine bolts:

when mine developed a base gasket leak, it burnt a whole right thru the top of the piston.

expect to do a full top end rebuild....
next size piston/rings, bore/hone and new gasket set (OEM or cometic base gasket only)

An air leak would have made a lean mixture creating heat to the piston.

If you pull the pipe off and look up the exhaust port you should be able to see if there is any damage to piston/rings.

A mirror may help.
