I need to check crank bearings

I have a noise in my engine and I was told it was one of two things. I either have piston slap or my crank bearings are going out. My question is, can I check the crank bearings without splitting the case. I think it's piston slap. I hurt the piston a little, cleaned it up and reused it. It measured ok but just barley. I know nothing about the bottom end, someone before me put that together and was just trying to save a buck on gaskets. Can I check'em without splitting the case?

you can pull the top end and see if you have up and down play by grabbing the connecting rod. you will have a little side to side play and thats ok as long as its not excessive.

Thanks noober, I wasnt sure. There should be no up and down movement at all correct?

u can also move ur flywheel up and down, any play and the crank bearings could be bad

Not sure what is exactly bad in engine until I get the top end off and check stuff out. I will also be checking the connecting rod when I'm in there. All great advise noober and freek, I'll check that as soon as I get a break from work.
