the blaster i am supposed to get off my friend just got another problem today... we went in and needed to get it out of first gear, the shifter goes all the way up and down and won't catch a gear, sometimes it will get close and very rarely it manages to change a gear. what could have happened? this wasn't happening before, it JUST happened. got any ideas guys?

That's normal for an engine that's not turning over. The transmission is designed around drive dogs which need to be moving to slide in and out of place. If it was shut down in gear, it won't want to shift out without the transmission moving. Try pushing the quad forward or backward gently while trying to shift. It should go ahead and pop out of that tough spot it's in right now.

i tried moving it and everything, it might be a good idea to mention that the top end and piston are off of it, along with the clutch cover and kickstarter shaft. would that cause the tranny to do this? i've tried everything i know to do so i'm turning to you guys :\

The clutch cover is off? The clutch cover acts like a "thrust washer" for the shifter shaft. It keeps the shaft from popping out and not engaging the shift star. Push the shift shaft all the way back in (towards the left side of the quad) and then shift it...
