Head gasket/top of piston

So I've mentioned my problem numerous times, and another poster had mentioned a similar problem but worded it much better. In short (edited);

when I start it, it runs but I have to keep on the throttle to keep it running and its revving pretty high, and when I let off it dies very fast

------

I took the top of the cylinder head off and to my surprise there wasn't even a gasket on it....there was sludge building up a bit right above the exhaust flange in the fins on the cylinder so I was wondering. Is there any reasonable reason to run it without this gasket? Or any reason to rebuild it and not put one on? I got it this way.

As I had mentioned in a previous thread of mine - I rode one morning and all was fine but I changed the plug/pulled the tank and all of a sudden I had the above problem.

I put the old plug back in and same thing, with carb cleaned (same with new plug). I looked at the reeds just a few weeks prior and they were fine....again I can't figure out what I possibly could've done so I decided to replace the head and base gasket.....if that doesn't work I'll just get rid of the frigging crap stock carb/tors.

So I looked at the piston, and the top of the piston is like pure black.....it doesn't really look bad at all or damaged - it almost looks like a finish but not flawless, plus it would make no sense with the rest of the piston being aluminum.

Dam thats your problem bro. You need a head gasket on it to seal right. You should clean the top of the piston, the top of the cylinder, the bottom of the head, get a gasket and but it back together. Dont forget to torqure the head bolts to specs nad in the correct order. Then see what it does from there.

See this is what I don't get....just common sense but the Blaster ran just fine when I bought it a little over a month ago and I had been riding it almost daily like this.....why the frig would someone throw a new piston/rings in, not even replace the gasket, and sell it without even mentioning it.

I only discovered just a day ago (or so) that there wasn't a head gasket on it and did a double take because it was one of those WTF moments...but there definitely isn't one on there. It should be metal, circular with a square edge on the one side with the 5 bolt holes of whatever it is, right? I've heard of people doubling up on gaskets on bikes....I don't know if that is to change the compression or what - but never without any.

It was seriously running fine though for like a month with no issues whatsoever so I don't understand....there wasn't really any high revving....it was starting first kick (most times with the choke on cold start)....it felt good riding it, had power, speed, etc. Ever since that one day though....damn the thing revs ridiculously high, wasn't idling for sh*t, wouldn't stay running without throttle open, smoking a ton, and so on. Luckily I really didn't run it for more than like 5 minutes total in this condition, but who knows because it never had a head gasket on it since I've owned it.

And I can't even get the cylinder off completely, the four bolts holding it on are like kung-fu gripped on there + loctite + whatever else....even with the right wrench the sh*t is about to make the nut all messed up and I would really be screwed. I'm almost hoping to take it somewhere else so if they screw it up then it is on them to get it off.

Now I'm just hopeful hoping that putting a new base gasket, actually putting a head gasket on (facepalm), & getting 100-150$ for a carb/no tors would eliminate my grief and I could ride this winter. Even if I just get the head gasket and a new carb, maybe I'll get extremely lucky and be able to ride with no previous damage having been done.

I don't see how it even ran without that gasket.

Me either, I don't get it....unless he used some kind of high heat gasket sealer or some crap. He had me test ride it at his house and again when he brought it out my way, plus I rode it around for like a month.

That could VERY easily be my problem though because the thing started just revving ridiculously high and seemed out of control - obviously nothing to do with just changing a plug....maybe I just got unlucky and it started sucking in air after I had rode for about an hour that one morning and let it sit for a few hours.

It wasn't until like the last 2-3 days that I had been riding that I noticed sludge built up/building up on the fins of the cylinder above the exhaust flange. X( If the guy would have just told me I would have went and spent 15$ for a freaking gasket before ever having ridden.

It seems crazy to me that it ran as well as it did, I don't know how the seller possibly got it sealed up or had it running well for me....I really hope that it was just good luck on my part and I'll be able to get this on and it will run well. There is a slight chance I may be able to come up with the money for a new carb as early as the next week or two, so if I get the chance I'm doing that.

If the rev is still out of control and it is dying out or smoking a ton, and the crank seals need replaced, I'm sh*t out of luck because dude told me 6-7 hour job/$350 + at a shop in my area. X( I probably wouldn't be able to get out of the Yamaha dealership in my area for less than 550.

Couple of questions I hope you or any other poster can answer:

What would I use to clean the top of the piston, and would I have to worry about crap/debris between the piston/cylinder wall if I just replace the head gasket right now?

Will definitely clean top of cylinder and bottom of the head....do you use loctite thread locker on the nuts? I want it to stay secure but also want to be able to get it off again if necessary...I remember it used to be like loctite blue or loctite red for different applications.

I was looking around, searching the internet, and looking through the Blaster manual I downloaded on this site, yet I couldn't find anything on the order in which to tighten the nuts....
