Won't start on first kick. Sometimes when I get it to crank will idle, then give gas to rev. and dies. Motor has no air leaks. Reeds are new. Once it's warmed up kicks over great. Maybe a float height issue? Doesn't like being cold.

To start from cold, pull out the fuel enrichment knob (choke), and keep your thumb off the throttle.

Warm it up a little before you push the choke off.

Float level may affect starting and will definatley affect riding, set it before you adjust the idle.

So float level on stock should be 20-21.5 mm, which is like .78 in. So that's like little over 3/4 in. I will have to check that again. And that's from gasket surface.
I usually do choke it. But it sometimes dies after starting with choke with no throttle.

have you checked compression? a leak down test wont tell you if your rings are shot. once the motor heats up the piston would expand and increase compression. check it cold

Maybe I should of said but it's a fresh rebuild. Just got done with heat cycles. Checked compression, 120psi.

So float height was good and compression was good as well. 120 psi. Pilot jet wasn't dirty. However I found some small debris in the carb. So maybe it was clogging the jets. But after fixing the exhaust leak at the flange, I had to readjust air/fuel screw. I'm still within spec. 2 tanks of gas then I can plug chop.

A leaking exhaust pipe will change the breathing.

Did you do the complete idle adjustment or just alter the air screw.?

I adjusted the air/fuel to highest idle and adjusted idle screw after. However, I don't get a lot of change in idle with the air/fuel screw. It changes more the further I turn it in then out. Doesn't change much after 1 1/2 turns out. But it does change. Is it suppose to be a dramatic change in idle when adjusting it?

One should warm up the engine, raise the idle with the idle screw to about 2000+ rpm, then adjust the air screw a little at a time waiting at least 10 secs for the engine to respond.

If the float level and the pilot jet is correct and clean, and there are no air leaks, adjusting the air screw should produce very noticeable changes in engine RPM.
