Parts are not that expensive when you can buy the whole truck for $400.The older dodges are easy as hell to work on and run really good unlike the newer pieces of poop.It is deffinately a good deal for $400 especially in the area we live in.In the end as long as it is american made I am happy no matter what american made vehicle it is.

Newer peices of poop? I had brand new 2004 Ram 1500 quad cab w/ the hemi and it was a beast! That winter we got 27 inches of snow Christmas Eve.... It was drifted up over hood. Still got out (had to dig out the drivers side so I could get in) and was able to drive my friend to Indy to catch a flight to Greece.

Aside from fuel mileage it was a great vehicle!

I have a 96 1500 4x4. It has the 318 with Holly TBI. It doesn't get much simpler or easier to work on. Yes it has an ecm for the injection but thats it. I love this truck. It starts evrey time I want it to. I've replaced two batteries and a water pump in 100.000 miles. Great Truck.

How was the repair bill?? I have had my share of dodges and never will buy one again unless it is a older ram.Had a durango blew through 2 rear ends and a tranny, had a 96 ram that everything went wrong with it including another tranny.Newer may be alright for the 5or 6 years you pay for it but me personally I would dump it right after.I personally like my fords. If I offended you with the dodge comment it is just my opinion.Thats all.Good day.

They're actually extremely easy to work on, and parts aren't so bad. Oh I like chevy's and fords too, but find me a decent project in decent shape with 100,000 original miles that costs less than $3500. Its not very easy, and the horsepower comment which I know will come up, thats explainable. 318's can make 415 horsepower with some machine work, and about 600 in parts. I know dodges are pretty reliable, the older trannies don't go half as often as the newer ones, and they're rugged.

its ganna take some money for the machine work to get that kind of power out of a 318, youll have to hunt down the right set of heads and a good cam, and some nice roller rockers, bump up the compression with some flat tops...
basicly if your looking to get 415 hp out of that 318 then your ganna have to take that whole top end and throw it in the trash and start lookin for parts....
and people think working over a blaster is expensive...

the newer 90's 4speed automatics are the ones that go boom constantly there are a lucky few who get one that lasts a little bit....
the 80's and old 727 3speed automatic is a pretty good transmition...
the part i meant to say that was expensive was the chassis parts they are usually double the price of GM parts..
the reason why i suggested chevy is because the carbed motors are sooo easy to get running all you need to make an HEI chevy run is ONE wire, and that is the hot for the distributor..
the only way you can get an older dodge to run without too many headaches is by running a points distributor, running points takes away the brain for the distributor and then all you have to run is a balast resistor so you dont burn up the points...
fords are the same way but at least they had a good EFI system in the 80's..

No theres an article on it, but you're right about the topend part fo' sho'. They decked the cylinder, bored it over, bought a comp cam (have the serial numbs for), and they're valve springs and got some KB flattops. Then they got 1980's 360 smog heads machined it for a 2.02 valve, and ported it to lower the compression. All of this I'd say cost about a grand? Thats not too bad my man. Chevys are certainly easier to build yes, and dodge parts are certainly more expensive as well, but find me a deal like this on a rolling chevy...
