gasket between engine and exaust?

bought a old beat up blaster today, looks like crap but seems to run great even with a few problems i've noticed.

one thing i noticed is the big part of the exaust that says fmf gold series fatty isnt really tight up against the engine. i was just going to tighten it but its a 95 that looks like it went through ww2 and my buddy says he thinks i'd need to replace a gasket when i tighten it. is there a gasket there? i want to order one if there is but dunno what its called

im also missing the peice that hooks the 2 silencer to the fat pipe i believe its called a coupler? if i email them and ask about a flange and exaust coupler they should know what im talking about or is it called a flange gasket or something?

sorry for all the questions that most would consider stupid but i have no experience with engines and parts and even atv's for that matter. i'm actually hoping owning this will help me learn more about fixing them and more about engines in general

im gonna tell you right now that FMF will charge you $30.00 for the flange, and $10.00 for the shipping. It comes in 2 days, but thats $40.00. When i got my pipe it didnt come with one. i would recoment taking it off and giving it a good clean and then putting it back on.

its going to be 2wks or so before i get the gasket kit, is it going to need to be parked untill then or will it be ok to put an hour or 2 on it? who knows how long the guy before me has been riding it like this.

also when i go to change the gasket is there any special procedure? or just spread the pipe far enough from the engine to slide gasket in then bolt tight?

that gasket your looking for is sold individually at vitos performance. pretty cheap too. they also have that exohst collar too.

and is THIS the right collar? they had one for 1in od pipes and one for 1.25" od pipes? i cant seem to find the specs on the fatty pipe to see what size it is

yea thats the gasket u need for the pipe manifold. i'm not sure about the collar if it don't fit i am sure u could take a dremel and make it fit or some thing..

i was just talking with a buddy that says that i shouldnt tighten the bolts he says that its the springs that need replaced? says the bolts arent supposed to hold it tight that thats the exhaust to cylinder spring's job. but he also warned his experience is with 2stroke bikes not quads

what are your thoughts on this? if its the springs where can i find them? looked on the net but search engines took me everywhere but the right place

I can see from the pic that you do need to tighten the nuts. the spring is fine.

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but...

What's the difference between his exhaust, which is held on by springs to a flange bolted to the cylinder, and mine, which has no springs and is bolted solidly to the cylinder? The pipe on mine is flared and has a two-hole collar that holds the whole deal to the cylinder. Was there a difference between years? Or is my pipe an aftermarket piece? It sure looks like a stock pipe; I would hope no aftermarket company makes a pipe that ugly. Hahahaha!

his is an FMF, I think yours the "stock" one is held on in the manner you speak. I just cant remember for sure its been over 15 years since I had my stock pipe on.
