Tulsa,ok.
ok this mite be a stupid Question but im going to try my hand in extending the swinger and had just a few questions. my chain is fairly new and i dont want to replace it all together, did any of you just buy a piece of chain to extended it or just buy a whole new chain? i have a chain breaker that i have used on my sportbike chain, so what whould be the down side on just adding on to the chain i have now? and if i did a +3 swingarm i would need a 6" chain extension right? the main reasons im wanting the +3 swinger is i ride alot of trails and there are alot of hills around where i ride and i have fliped it over once or twice, and i would like a little more space between the tires and my feet ( yes i have heel guards but ya know) thanks all for the input

Just get a new chain. Adding a section of 6 link creates 2 weaker spots in the chain thus making it easier to break.

i dont see how it would create a weak spot? all chains are put together the same ( mostly ) . a roller is fitted between two link plates and a pin is pressed in to hold it all together, rinse and repeat ( in short ) . to add more links you just press out a pin put the new links in and press pin back in... this is the way manufactures build the chain so why would me doing the same thing be any different? i have broke down quite a few motorcycles in my time and never had one "break". but i have never added new chain to old, that was the main question here whats the down side of adding new to old? i know it wont make it weaker as i have done it before just like i said never added new chain to old chain...

ok so anyone else have any input to my question and please say more than " ull prolly just end up getting a new chain " cuz that doesn't answer my question... thank you

just buy a new oring chain.. youll end up buying a new one since you want to put new on old so more than likely you will need to get a new one soon.. ya it dont make them weaker i got a friend that hill climbs he does it all the time when he changes how far the swingarm is extend or when he puts on a different tooth sprocket.. but dont waste your time new on old.. just buy new

thanks yb but my friends dad has been the head of the welding department at his metal shop for 30 something years, he said he had the material all ready and he could do it for free... what he said he would do is weld some square tubing that just fits on the inside of the swinger, then weld some tubing that is the same size as the swinger to make it look flush. im not worried about weight so he could add all the metal he wants as long as it don't snap lol.

+3 swingarm needs a 102 link chain.
+4 swingarm needs a 106 link chain.

Do yourself a favor and get a new chain.Adding length will lessen the strenght of the chain and when it comes off it tends to blow a hole right through the cases.Save the headache and get a new chain.Good luck.

i cut a universal 120 link too short one time and had to have 2 masters, a link or 2 apart, ran it like that forever with no problems, and i beat on it constantly, so i see no prob's just adding a length, are you talkin 'bout adding some of the old chain you took off???
cause i'm thinkin there was a reason you put a new one on??? the old one was wore out, and all that does is wear out sprockets, so it'll cost ya in the end anyway
if $$ is an issue, just get a 120 link non o-ring chain from ebay for like $15, cut it to fit,
thats what im runnin and freek says it has less rolling resistance than o-ring<<< which is always good

no i was thinking of getting some left over links from the cycle shop my friend works at but if i can get a new one from ebay for 15 ill just do that...

it will not lessen the strength... im not talking about adding master links ( even though they are as strong as a regular link ) when you press out a rivet with a chain breaker and add links that way it will not hurt it in any way...

I had to shorten my chain on my gsxr-750 using this same method, my bike has about 140hp at the rear wheel, i have put about 15k miles on it since i broke down the chain, im not easy by any means on my bike, i do track days, i go on 200-300 mile rides, and i have never ever had any problems with my chain...

im sorry if im rude but its people like you that distribute wrong information... if you tell some one that this is bad and the go to a shop to have their bike worked on and the mec. does this to their bike, they are going to think its wrong and who knows what would happen. im just trying to say if you dont know for sure what your talking about then dont say it as a fact cuz its not...no disrespect intended

It's not wrong information it is CORRECT information.Go ask your loacal bike shop what they think.Adding extra master links will take away some of the tensile strength of the chain.Just adding and riveting on new links is another story.I have tried it and believe me the chain gets loose alot quicker. So next time before you call me out get to know your facts CAUSE IT IS CORRECT INFORMATION.Now go get some more links and do it your own way, which according to you is the correct way.lol Same here no disrespect intended either,I will be sure to help you out when your chain goes through the cases. For what it is worth if I went to a bike shop and they put on 2 master links I would grab them by the neck cause it is not correct,it is shady.IMO GOOD DAY

You are asking the down side of using more chain and then tell me adding master links does not change the tensile strenght.Seems like you already know so why even ask,I mean you are the chain lengthening genius.

i was the one talkin 'bout 2 masters, i think he was talkin bout adding links by actually using and hammering the rivets???
and i do believe using 2 masters would weaken it, but i didnt have any probs when i did it in an emergency, but think his method of using a chain breaker and the rivets would be ok???
sounds like he's gonna put it back together just like it came apart,
sorry if i caused any flak between you two

if you go back and READ, i was asking about adding new chain to old chain and what is the down side to that. not whats the down side to extending the chain...
