u put it in the end of the silencer to keep water out when ur hauling it or whatever. If you forget it and start the quad it will sound muffled and then blow 10 ft, at least on my ltr it did....good times

u should at least stuff a rag or tape over it...the water will get in the low part where the header hooks to the stinger, which it could rust from the inside if it sat for a while.
if you dont spray water down ur pipe its ok..but like kgibson said its so you can garuntee nothing gets down there or rust can form... i have one for each bike and store them like that just as an added security for my engines,

With the stock exhaust I never used one. Now I just bunch up a rag and put it in there, and let it run for a while after I'm done. Haven't had a problem yet
