Engine won't shift smoothly on the bench??

Doing my first rebuild of a bottom end, on my 88 blaster. I have been careful and followed the clymer manual very accurately. My transmission was shifting fine when it was just the shift star with no stopper or shift shaft. Now with the shift shaft and stopper thing it sometimes gets stuck between gears like on the spike of the star. Is this normal as the motor has no oil right now and is still on the bench with no pressure on the sprocket or anything? Any help would be appreciated!

Just some info on my blaster. got it a half year ago with about 50 hours on the whole thing, was awesome. And I made the fatal mistake of not removing the oil injector and I roasted the top and bottom end on it.

Are the cases put back together ? Is the right clutch side case put back on ? If so I'd say throw the correct amount of oil in there and see if the problem still occurs !

Cases back together, had the side cover on but I took it off to see the shifter. Even with oil, is it supposed to shift smoothly with no load on the sprocket? Seems like you can't shift machines that are sitting still so maybe this has to do with that.

you have to have the transmission spinning for it to shift on the bench.
try spinning the output sprocket while shifting.

tore my first one back apart 6 times till i threw in the flag and figured the boy only gets a 3 speed :o
it shifted fine after i had it running

also, be sure the detent springs on the shift shaft are actually returning it to it's "nuetral" position, or it won't shift to the next gear.

you could check out KOR videos on youtube i just put mine back together following these they are great videos it's the only reason i attempted it myself very easy to follow

Mine if im sitting there sometimes you can go thru the gears not running but usually its gotta be running to shift right. Rarely will all the gears line up perfect. They must move to mesh right
