Just kidding! I finally got to the point where it was time to tear apart the bottom end for this project. When I bought the quad the guy told me the top end was worn out and it ate a ring due to too large cylinder tolerance.
Now that I tore the bottom end apart - I see what probably really killed the motor. When I took the gear off - this is what I saw! And no, I didn't have to even pull the remains out for the picture...
Both sides of the seal were all that was left. I found the spring tucked in behind a gear. Both pieces were metal, but the new seals in my seal kit are all rubber. This is the first blaster I have rebuilt, but I rebuilt my banshee motor in the spring and that had all rubber seals too so maybe this was the oem seal or something and is different.
All of the bearings felt good except for the two on the smaller gearstack. The needle bearing feels a little loose and rough, and the big ball bearing on the other end seems to catch a little when spun by hand. I will see how they are once I get everything cleaned in the parts washer.
