DIY splitting cases

Its easy.i didnt need any special tools any time ive ever done them.just go slow take lots of pics and keep it clean and in order and you cant go wrong.of course a manual to reference wont hurt either.

It didn't take you any special tools?

How did you remove your flywheel? How did you hold the inner clutch hub to get the nut loose? How did you keep the crank gear from spinning to get that nut out of the center of it? How did you get the cases apart?

I DO NOT recommend any undertake splitting a case without a flywheel remover, a case splitter and a clutch holding tool.

Those three are (what I would consider) REQUIRED to do it properly. Obviously there are ways around but sometimes they lead you down rabbitholes which are best left unexplored.

The good news is, the required tools are less expensive to purchase than it costs for a dealership to reassemble a bottom end just once. In fact, if you're savvy you can actually save money purchasing all of the tools needed and doing it yourself, and you'll still have the tools!

the harmonic balancer puller that i used is about the only thing that i would recommend in lieu of a case splitter.

some people do this job with rubber mallets and screw drives, etc........these methods are asking for problems with clearances and sealing after it goes together.....this is how guys like me and sicivicdude get cheap motors

buy the tools it will keep you from screwing up a mating surface or breaking something that will cost you more than the proper tool.
been their done that before!!

i used a harmonic balancer puller and a small torch to split mine and after a little heat and a couple tap with a rubber mallet it practically fell apart.

And after talking with ken lapped mine to be on the safe side.

a harmonic balancer puller is an acceptable method to split the cases. I was really inquiring how you held the clutch and main gears to get them apart and the flywheel pulled off the crank...
