Dies when idling, running rich I think. Help?!

It just seems like you hit a wall with the rpms, it seemed like in first, and second gear there was no powers then shift to third and I would get that big spike in power but then rpms max out and shift more but never get that power back like that one initial time. It doesn't feel/sound like its reaching max rpms, I can have it full throttle in 3rd and only be going 30-40 km/hr and not accelerating. But I am new to blasters and don't have anything to compare to.

Not sure, it shifts fine, what would slipping sound and feel like? How much slack should I have, I can check after work.

Prolly rule out a slipping clutch because if it was slipping you would not have any problem maxing out the revs.

What setting is your needle at.

Do you ease the throttle on or do you give it a thumb full.

Is the TORS still fitted?

Here is a reference to what speed can be expected from a stock setup, and the link so you can change your parameters such as tyre size, sprocket ratios.

Tors is deleted with the proper delete kit, needle is on middle setting. Does each gear give that kick in the pants for a couple seconds until it levels out and reaches top speed for the gear, because my first gear I got no torque, I read about people being able to do wheelies in 1st, I can definately not, my first last about 3-5 seconds until I got no power left and need to shift, no kick in the pants Locke I feel in 3rd gear. I don't think I mash the throttle, I may do it unintentionally trying to get more speed out of the quad.

May I ask what mods are done, do you have an aftermarket pipe.

If the bike is bog stock then do not expect too much power, power comes at a price!

Have you done a plug chop to confirm your jetting, if you are overly rich power can be lost.

I don't think I have an aftermarket pipe, is there a way to tell by looking at it? Everything appears stock, but I am new to this. If it's all stock and I have stock jets, what are some things that would cause me to run rich?

I've checked the jets and I have a 230 main and 32.5 pilot. I did notice on the carb if I pull out the choke I can't really tell a difference when I'm starting the quad, does that mean anything?

Float level set too high.

Carb flooding.

Filthy air filter.

Sock stuck in the air box ( believe it or not it has happened ).

Snorkel on air box blocked.

I think you may be right because was looking at it yesterday and saw the overflow tube coming off the choke/idle/air screw side of the carb had a little 1" puddle of gas at the end if the tube where it was resting on the engine.

So what are the things that cause a carb to flood, I will check all of them!

Thanks guys, you have been very helpful. Keep up the good work :)

The main causes of flooding are, incorrect float level setting, dirt in the needle and seat, float rubbing the bowl.

Sometimes the needle and seat can suffer varnish build up and can be removed with a Q tip dipped in toothpaste.

Shake the float to see if it has any fuel inside it.

Okay, I was wrong appears carb is leaking from drain, screw is tightened so there must be an overflow feature. It doesn't leak when stationary but if I wiggle the quad it starts dribbling, leaks even when not running.

Suggestions?

I opened carb and everything looked good, measured float height at 21mm, is it 21 from inner base of carb where gasket lies, do I measure from surface of gasket or remove gasket and measure?

Even if I'm off by say 2 mm is that enough to cause overflowing?

remove gasket

yes 2mm can overflow it

could 2mm overflow a full glass of water? yup

if its off 2 mm, the needle wont seal properly letting in extra fuel

Fuel level can be checked by lifting the end of the drain hose above the carb body, with the petcock on and the engine running.

Crack the drain screw open and the fuel level should hover at the top of the float bowl gasket.

Okay will fine tune it tomorrow, as far as I know from reading around, leaking out drain can be:

Float height
Needle not sealing due to dirt or varnish
Rubber tip damaged
Float getting stuck
Floats no longer buoyant

Anything else I'm missing?

You got it.

If the tank breather is blocked and the weather is hot or the tank is in the sun, that too can cause flooding.
