Cuts out with airbox lid on

I just bought my nephew a 2001 Yamaha Blaster that is 100% bone stock. I just cleaned the carb and air filter. The thing runs great with the airbox lid off but as soon as I put the lid on it cuts out and looses almost all power. Any ideas on why this is happening or if it is okay to just leave the airbox lid off. Thanks, Cobyjr.

don't take my word on this but i think its a jetting related problem. also it is okay to run it without the air box lid on you just want to get like an outerwear cover and clean the air filter after every ride.
