So my blaster is leaking oil pretty bad. It happened recently after my front sprocket broke off and the chain got lodged and threw me forward. I replaced the sprocket and it is driving fine. There is a leak coming from the bottom where the case splits. How hard is it to fix this leak. I'm assuming I need to reseal the crankcase, I've never done engine work like this. I have replaced several top ends, just never messed with the bottom. Any suggestions on things to get before i open it up. Like bearings and seals? Is there a kit to buy that comes with all the bearings and seals and a instructional guide. Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Dude, buy or download a manual for 15 buck first.. They have all the steps and details of torque settings and so on..

But, the yamaha does not have a gasket in between the crank cases, they are machined to be really really flat, and then they use a gasket compound known as Yamabond, or Threebond. It is not a silicone based sealant, but a natural rubber based one..

You can get a full bearing kit for like 50 or 60 $ a full gasket and seal kit for about 50$, and while you have it all apart, you should check your connecting rod, and if its slightly out, you may wanna change it since your going to have EVERYTHING apart..

Special tools, look these up online and try to rent them for the day ur doing the work, and the assembly..
Crank case splitting tool
Flywheel holding tool
flywheel removing tool
Clutch holder tool
crankcase installing tool
impact screw driver

These are all the tools I have missed and eventually bought that I would love to have with me when doing a whole engine rebuild. Also, read the manual first, Clean the dam thing really well ( it sucks to have an engine clean on the inside and transfer the dirt from the outside to the inside with your fingers ) and take your time..

You think I will be able to ride for next week or two? There is still oil in the crankcase. The leak is kind of slow. I had it sitting for a week and it leaked out maybe 2/3 of quart of oil. Over night it will leave a puddle about the size of a dinner plate. I was thinking I could just keep adding oil each time I ride until I get the right tools, parts, and manual. I plan on ordering everything this week sometime which will take a couple of weeks to get in. Thanks alot for the advise little-j. How do I give rep points, I'd like to hook you up.

Thanks man I think I may try the JB weld temporarly. Im wanting to get my bottom end rebuilt by Ken Oconner Racing, thinking about getting a port job as well. Thanks for the help.

hey one thing to take into consideration is that when the quad sits the oil is cool and thicker. After it heats up it becomes MUCH thinner and could leak out faster, possibly all of it while riding, then the real fun begins. i would not ride it until its fixed. jb weld does work well for stuff like this BUT you have to do it really well to have questionable results. make sure you let it cure for a good amount of time before riding. dont put it on there and expect to ride the next day

I think you need to press the green dot on the bottom left of someones post to give a rep.. If you hover over the buttons with your mouse, it tells you what each one is.

The risk is not your transmission, but whether your engine will suck air in through the leak leaning out your mixture.. If the leak is towards the back of the case, you should be fine as long as you keep the right amount of oil in there, But yeah, give it a JB weld, better for the environment to not have tranny oil dripping everywhere! lol

blasterfreek case savers FTW!!!! i dont leave home without it!!!! hahah

My guess is that it is actually leaking from where the chain punched a hole in the case, then running down and dripping from the bottom. I doubt you hurt your case half joint when the chain piled up, but you likely did punch a hole in the case right in the sprocket area. Clean it up good and JB it.
