i have a rebuild blaster engine with full dg pipe w/ shorty, boyesen reeds, and uni airfilter. i have a couple concerns...

1. the past couple times ive gone riding hard on it, once im out for a good hour, maybe 2 hours, it starts to run very sluggish and when i go to neutral, its revving very high and if i tap the slightest bit on the throttle, it revs higher and higher and doesnt stop and i have to pop the clutch holding the brakes to cut off the engine. i took it to my mechanic and he doesnt see anything wrong. what could it be? tors?

2. when i start my blaster up, it smokes not a lot and after i have it wamred up, it doesnt smoke at all, and if i hit the throttle a liuttle, it revs really high fast, and takes a while to get back down to idle speed. what could this be? also sometimes at like 1st gear, 1/8 throttle, it sputters a little.

3. im going to check how the jets are and everything this week and what should my jets be like? (main, needle, air, etc..) im going to do the street-cut off test. whats the best way to take out the spark plug? do i have to take the fuel tank and everything off too?

4. the engine also seems to get really hot, fast. i could have it just idleing for maybe 5 minutes and take it not even in midrange rpms around the yard for a minute, and the engine area is hot.is this normal?

5. last but not least, :p there seems to be a knock from the engine, ive heard that blasters are known for being noisey, is this normal? and if i rev it some, i see some exhaust smoke coming from the bottome of the engine, where the exhaust header meets the engine. is this bad? is it an airleak?

yes, i know that is a lot, but i havent found a solution for it. and im fairly new to 2strokes and im only 15 so ANY help is greatly appreciated :)

well airleaks or running lean cause it to rev high .i think your exhaust leak could cause it to run sluggish too definately fix that. what size main jet you running?you should probly be around a 300 if you have stock carb.its normal to smoke when started and not smoke when warm.i mix 32;1 4oz to every gallon of gas along with alot of people on here. your air mixture screw should be like 1 1/2 turns out to start.pull your plug white/lean black/rich plug brownish is what you want.

thanks guys, tomoro depending on the weather, im going to take a part the carb and clean and i will get u the jet sizes. and how should i go about fixing the exhaust thing, its held on by a spring around it. maybe put the screw holding it, through a couple loops of the spring to make the length shorter, making it tighter?

It sounds like you have a air leak,i just fixed my bas gasket it was running like yours, runs good now.

is that your base gasket? becasue i looked at my cylinder head gaasket today, before i went to school, (im in school now) and it seems like a thin metal gasket and on the front side in the crack, it looks like its hanging out a little bit

deffinatly get a bigger jet in there before you blow it up, and check for air leaks. check the intake boot. your head and cylinder. make sure they are torqued down good.

i just got home from school and started it up and found that the exhaust isnt coming from the exhaust header, its coming form the cylinder head. im going to tear it down now.... ill keep you all informed

so i just got back in, i tighteened down the head down, i was surprised, i got like 3/4 turn on each nut. surprised it didnt blow up or something. and i tightened up the exhaust spring a little. then i put a brand new plug in, started it up and it ran better, not best though. the idle is calmer now and there is less noise from the engine. i warmed it up, took it down the street, in 6th gear. came back in 6th gear, pulled clutch in and cut the engine. pulled the plug and it was black. so i dropped the throttle needle e clip down a notch (towars the pointy end) and put it all back together. let it warm up again and 6th gear, pulled the clutch, etc... pulled the pluyg and it was a nice tan color. it made me happy:) haha so it looks like it was going to rain so i pulled the carb out and im waiting to get a ride to the shop and pick up a can of carb cleaner than i will be pulling it apart and cleaning it. i will loet u know the jets, etc.. thanks guys

yeahh, thanks guys.
i took apart the carb and cleaned it up and i was surprised at the main jet. i was thinking there would be like a 280 or 270, but there was a 220 in there. the quad seems to run okay, but do you think i should change it or not?

okay, ill probably take a trip over to the shop again for jets. if they are cheap, which im guessing, ill probably get a couple different sizes to see what is best. ill probabaly start with a 280? and yeah i was very surprised it was a 220. how do jets get rated? the bigger the jet, the richer? or other way around?

heres the update. i got the jets, i got a 250 and 270 main. i put the 270 in, put it all back together, ran it, warmed it up, hit 6th gear, and this is what my plug looks like:

i heard that the perfect plug is a tannish brown. and this is what the plug looks like. it jus seems like the engine is a little hot and my low-midrange doesnt really kick in. but other than that its good so far.what do you think?
